Flex queue is causing matchmaking problems, players still wait on solo queue
The competitive matchmaking system in League of Legends was a hot topic in the past week. His most emphasized point of contention was the behavior of other players, specifically teammates. Griefing can be done through text chat by using slurs or insults to upset other players, but automated text filters can catch these offenders with adequate regularity although the more inventive griefers can still find workarounds.
The bigger issue, however, is when players grief through gameplay. Most instances of griefing are fairly blatant to the human eye.
In case you’re experiencing matchmaking issues, the fault is not on your end. Players are experiencing problems with the in-game coordinator and many won’t be able to even queue for a 2 Aug League of Legends.
I think with a post like this people don’t want to waste time reading stuff so I’m going to be quick then put the data, I’ll put my thoughts on it afterwards. Below is a table showing the data collected by looking at the last 20 games played by each of the top players on the EUW, NA and KR servers. I looked at the tier average for each of those 20 games and recorded the frequency split by server. I also took the amount of time each player took to play their last 20 games and averaged it to get a value for roughly how many games the top players on each server are playing a day.
So even to someone who doesn’t know what this means I think it’s fairly obvious that the numbers for Europe look very different to the relatively similar stats for Korea and North America. I think to most people on this subreddit however the table should be fairly self explanatory. The only misunderstanding I could see happening is that these numbers do not reflect the actual number of games happening.
For example the 4 data points for European challenger MMR games does not equal 4 different games. In fact 3 of those data points are from the same game. Which means there are only 2 games I could find which could reasonably be called a Challenger MMR game. You can take a look at them here. I actually tweeted some stats like this recently and one of the main counterpoints I got was “maybe because everyone is scrimming all the time in Europe there are actually just less chance for higher MMR games to happen”.
Even if this were true I think the disparity between EUW and the other two servers should not be this large based off just that factor alone.

Fix matchmaking lol
Matchmaking is the existing automated process in League of Legends that matches a player to and against other players in games. The system estimates how good a player is based on whom the player beats and to whom the player loses. It knows pre-made teams are an advantage, so it gives pre-made teams tougher opponents than if each player had queued alone or other premades of a similar total skill level Riot Games Inc.
The basic concept is that the system over time understands how strong of a player you are, and attempts to place you in games with people of the same strength. As much as possible, the game tries to create matches that are a coin flip between players who are about the same skill. The Matchmaking System works along with a modified version of the Elo system.

New accounts and smurfs frustrate the player base because they create uneven teams. A beginner may be incorrectly placed in a higher elo and get destroyed by the opposition. Smurfs, on the other hand, create a one-sided lobby and waste time and LP for players trying to climb. The second half of will be dedicated to fixing a few community complaints that hinder the ranked experience. Many players feel like League has grown more toxic in recent years, with players intentionally feeding, griefing, or raging and facing little consequence for their actions.
Riot is working on better detection and punishment for those types of behaviors, as well as giving more frequent feedback to players who report an unsportsmanlike player. Devs are also reassessing the promotion system, which can often cost players multiple days of heartbreak and anguish. And the restrictions for forming a group in flex queue will be loosened up to make it easier to play with friends, while still creating a competitive experience.
No specific timeline on these matchmaking tweaks has been offered yet. But Riot will likely update fans when the changes are further solidified. Skip to content. Image via Riot Games.

I believe the game really does need a better tutorial as well. Having someone go on his own and learn how to play while being in an open crew affects everyone else. I don’t mind showing others how to do things and answer questions. I always try to be helpful. The problem starts when you find yourself controlling a galleon by yourself while everyone else is just standing there without helping, and it doesn’t matter how much you explain.

This ostensibly makes it difficult for skilled players to “climb” up the matchmaking ranking and out of Elo hell , due to the difficulty of consistently winning games under these conditions. Its existence in various games has been debated, and some game developers have called it an illusion caused by cognitive bias. The term was coined based on the Elo rating system designed by Arpad Elo , which was initially used for chess games but began to be used in video games as well.
Elo rankings have also been “abused” by players who create parties of their friends in order to “escape” Elo hell. Elo hell has also been noted as existing outside of video games, such as in the matchmaking app Tinder , which also uses a variant of the Elo rating system. Supposing that one is in Elo hell has been known to cause frustration and video game rage. This has caused games that use the Elo system to be noted as some of the most “toxic” games to play.
Esports players of competitive games have recommended that players who are “stuck in Elo hell” “take every game seriously” and focus on winning at all costs. Riot Games claimed in a update to the matchmaking FAQ of League of Legends that Elo hell did not exist, citing the Dunning-Kruger effect and negativity bias from their worst experiences with the game as reasons why players believe the system is “imbalanced”. Experiments conducted by two Dota 2 players appeared to conclude that Elo hell did not exist in that game in a significant way, as an experienced player was able to raise their rank merely by playing well and “carrying” their team.
The third competitive season of Overwatch introduced changes in skill rating ostensibly designed to prevent players from being stuck in Elo hell.
